Antique Sad Irons Lot of 3 Colebrookdale Iron Co
- 3 cast iron "Sad Irons" produced late 1800's- early 1900's by Colebrookdale Iron Co in Boyertown PA
- company originally founded in 1720 as Colebrookdale Furnace
- called "Sad Irons" because they were heavy and could weigh up to 9 pounds depending on size
- they were usually used as 2 or 3 bottoms to a single wooden detachable handle so they could be used in tandem
- this lot has 3 bottoms one of which has a handle attached and all are embossed with the number 1
Size: all are 6/1/2" long x 3" at widest point but height is 2" on bottoms only & 5" on the one with the handle attached
Condition: These are primitive reminders of a time when a Women's work was truly never done BUT they are NOT functional.
I have never tried to remove the handle to see if it fit the other 2 bottoms and never attempted to clean or shine them.
The only recommendation I could find online for cleaning them is turpentine and boiled linseed oil mixed 50/50 which I am sure we all handy.
One bottom has damage along the top which can be seen it the main pic & each of these weighs slightly over 3 pounds.
