Position Function Summary Under the general direction of the CFO, the Grants Accountant is responsible for maintaining financial, accounting and grant support services in order to meet the needs of La Familia Medical Center and its funders.
Performs a broad scope of professional accounting activities requiring experienced, professional knowledge and application of accounting principles and practices in accordance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), applicable grant terms and conditions, other contractual obligations, and Governing Board-approved financial policies of LFMC.
Essential Responsibilities Maintains grant files, including final signed agreements, approved budgets, and other relevant information for Federal, state and local grants and cooperative agreements; Works with Development on allocations, reporting and invoicing requirements of federal, state, local and private funders.
Partners with the Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Development Officer to create budgets and other reports for grant proposals; Submit financial reports to grant funders as required under grants and agreements; Submits payment requests via appropriate channels for reimbursement on grant agreements; track payment requests to assure timely receipt of grant payments; Prepares the monthly recognition of grant revenue via journal entry; Ensures the accuracy of grant cost allocations within the accounting system; Supports leadership team and program managers to forecast, spend, and reallocate grant budgets; tracks expenses/revenue to grant budget to ensure maximization of awarded funds; provides monthly grant reports to leadership and managers for review; Completes financial reconciliations by request of granting agencies; Responds to requests for information on various grants; Records the cost of newly added fixed assets and tracks existing ones; Calculates and records depreciation/amortization and accounts for disposal of fixed assets; Assists the CFO with month-end and year-end close activities including journal entries and reconciliations; Assists in the preparation of the annual organization-wide budget and subsidiary budgets; Recommends new processes and improvements in grant accounting procedures to improve financial efficiency; Develops and maintains software reporting functionality for the finance office.
Assists with ad hoc reporting on the fund accounting software; Prepares summary status reports utilizing the fund accounting system, electronic medical records, practice management system, spreadsheets, graphs and word processing programs; Assists the CFO in the annual audit process to ensure timely provision of worksheets, accounting and operational details, and other relevant information; Assists with procurement processes through verification of authorized purchases per funding contracts and LFMC policies and procedures, and other relevant regulatory contracting terms and conditions; Serves as back-up for daily cash deposits and AP check processing.
Education, Experience and Skills/Training Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting from an accredited college or business administration or management with a minimum of five (5) years job related experience, required; Recent health care accounting experience in the Federally Qualified Health Center environment highly preferred; Experience in governmental or not-for-profit organizations required; LFMC required training Including, but not limited to: basic Annual Safety, HIPAA, Anti-harassment Training; Basic Knowledge and ability of general office procedures including filing, copying, faxing, use of a computer, to multitask within established deadlines, work under the direction of a supervisor and follow instructions for work completion, and take initiative to resolve patient concerns and problems; Financial analysis, budgeting, cost controls; proficiency in using financial and business computer applications, specifically Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, pivot tables, and statistical and financial functions; Ability to analyze and interpret financial information with governmental regulations; to write reports, business correspondence, and financial policies and procedures; to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Detail oriented, meticulous in the presentation of work products and a strong emphasis on accuracy; fundamental knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles; Solid working knowledge and ability to apply the principles of cost accounting; Fluent in English.
